Samhain 2016: "Black Jack Pumpkin Ale"

"Black Jack Pumpkin Ale" Vintage Beer Label Design

Days are getting noticeably shorter, the nights cooler, and a few leaves have started to drop from their branches. The ancient festival of Samhain approaches.

The Celtic peoples of Europe marked the end of the "lighter half" of the year, and the beginning of the "darker half" at Samhain. It was thought that this was a time when the veil that separated the living from the dead was lifted, and that the dead, and dark faeries would walk among the people.

Precautions were taken against these evil spirits. Vegetables were carved into horrible faces and put on window sills to ward off any trespasser that may wish to do harm. Grotesque costumes were worn while traveling so as to blend in with the traveling dead. For should the Aos Si (Faeries) discover a human traveling the road, they may kidnap them away to the other side.

It was not purely a time of fear, though. There was much feasting to be had from the recent harvest. Bonfires were lit to mark the passing of the year. Offerings to dead ancestors who may be travelling the road were left outside. Children dressed as the dead would go door to door seeking these offerings.

The Church tried to suppress these folk traditions by instituting November 1st as All Saints Day, and the preceding night as All Hallows Eve in the hope that the holy day would turn the people from the old ways.

It did not have the desired effect.

The Irish and Scottish who settled America brought their Samhain customs with them, and, today, Halloween continues to be one of the most popular days of the year.

So Halloween/Samhain is a particularly special time of year for Celtic Hammer Club because not only is it a lot of fun, but it also has it's roots in the Celtic history that inspires the artwork on the CHC apparel. Perfect!

So this year's Samhain design incorporates another personal love... BEER! Pumpkin ale, specifically. One of the other great things about the Samhain season are the variety of pumpkin beers that pop up on the liquor store shelves. Some people hate them. A lot of people love them. Either way, it presents a unique opportunity to create a stylish looking beer label design that draws upon the traditions of Samhain. It's creepy, it's vintage looking, it's unique. It's the Black Jack Pumpkin Ale!

Brewed dark as Halloween night, this black pumpkin ale was brewed with real pumpkin, molasses, and spices. Dark in color, but light in body; this is a heavily spiced pumpkin ale with a dose of blackstrap molasses that adds the burning notes of a Samhain bonfire! – CHEERS!

A Samhain themed beer label, this design combines the JACK in BLACK JACK and JACK-O-LANTERN to create an original beer label that is a one-of-a-kind design that’s a perfect way to celebrate fall, Halloween, or Samhain, but will also look good at any time of the year!
